5/21/2023 0 Comments Savushun by simin daneshvar![]() ![]() Published 50 years ago in 1969, Simin Daneshvar’s Savushun, the first modern Persian-language novel penned by a female author and still Iran’s best-selling work of fiction, tells of the trials of an idealistic patriot and his family during the Allied Occupation of Iran in the early 1940s. ![]() Mentioned in Zoroastrian scripture, occupying a central place in Iran’s national epic, the Shahnameh ( Book of Kings), and ritually mourned by Iranians since the Sasanian era (224–651 AD), Siyâvash unsurprisingly also lies at the heart of a major work of modern Persian literature. SEDUCED AND SLANDERED, then vindicated only to be unjustly murdered in exile, Siyâvash is unquestionably one of the most tragic figures in Iranian lore, if not the most tragic. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Personal Recollections of a Cavalryman with Custer's Michigan... by James Harvey Kidd![]() ![]() In the battle of Falling Water, he was wounded in the foot and sent to a hospital in Washington. The scene at the end where the vampire creatures break into Robert Neville's lab is intense and amazing, and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't how it should have played out. Up until the point where Alice Braga's character appeared, I was enjoying it so much that I was considering putting it on my best of 2007 list. ![]() I think I saw it around three times in theaters and loved it more each time. I actually loved I Am Legend quite a damn bit. ![]() You've been warned - everything from this point forward contains spoilers. And to say it simply - you NEED to watch this. Thankfully we've grabbed the new version for you viewing pleasure below. The DVD is arriving in a few weeks and Francis Lawrence's original ending that was made is included on it. Last December when I Am Legend hit theaters, one of the biggest complains I heard was that the ending was completely changed from the book and in turn the entire "legend" concept that Richard Matheson originally wrote was never actually seen. And all in the same, I'm putting a theatrical spin on it, so let's just get to it. ![]() ![]() We normally never ever talk about anything related to DVD, but this time this is too amazing to pass up. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Ice Blue by Anne Stuart![]() ![]() When the her heroes come to the realization that they love the heroine, it is powerful stuff. That’s what makes the endings of her books so great. What’s that saying “the bigger you are, the harder you fall”? That’s how Stuart’s heroes are. No, this is a “you got it my way, I may have to kill you” sort of way. And I don’t mean in an “oh you’re so annoying” sort of way. One thing that I’ve come to expect from an Anne Stuart novel is that the hero thinks about killing the heroine multiple times. Now Reno and Jilly are pawns in a deadly tangle of assassination attempts, kidnappings and prisoner swaps that could put their steamy partnership on ice. They’d met once before and the attraction was odd- tattooed Yakuza punk meets leggy California egghead-but electric.
